Our Landscapes Within explores identity through the lens of four contemporary women photographers. Each artist offers a unique perspective on the rich, diverse visual representations of Afro-descendant legacy across four distinct regions of Mexico. Through their work, these photographers explore the cultural heritage, traditions, and stories that shape these communities’ lives, inviting viewers to engage with and appreciate the profound connections between ancestry and contemporary identity in Mexico.

About the artists
Koral Carballo (b. 1987) is a photojournalist, documentary photographer, and visual artist based in Mexico. Her work has been exhibited in Europe and Latin America. She has received international awards and grants, including the Leica Women Foto Project Award (2025), The Revolutionary Storyteller Grant from Photographers Without Borders (2024), and a grant from the National Geographic Society (2022), among others.
Carolina Fuentes (b. 1977) is a visual artist and photographer. She apprenticed with Maurizio Berlincioni in Florence, Italy. Her photographs have been shown in solo and group exhibitions at museums, galleries, and cultural centers in Mexico and abroad. Her work is also part of public collections, including the Centro Queretano de la Imagen in Querétaro, Mexico.
Judith Romero (b. 1976) works as a photographer and editorial designer and has experience in cultural management. She has presented solo exhibitions in Mexico, Chile, Slovenia, and Poland. Her work is included in collections like PICS (Contemporary Images Platform of the Image Center), the MUMA (Museum of Mexican Women Artists), and Women Photographs.
Vanessa Quintero Castañeda (b.1979) is a visual artist, educator, and researcher from Colombia. She graduated from the Departmental Institute of Fine Arts in Cali and earned a Master’s in Photographic Design from the Ibero-American University of León, Mexico. Vanessa has shown her work in both Mexico and Colombia. She teaches at the Pontifical Javeriana University in Cali.
